Lahpet or pickled tea is the most iconic of Burmese foods and unique to the country. It’s eaten in two main ways – as a-hlu lahpet, where the ingredients are served in a beautiful, divided lacquerware dish (aka Mandalay lahpet), and as a salad known as lahpet thoke (aka as Yangon lahpet).Eat as a snack, as a palate-cleanser at the end of a meal or with rice.
Recipe kindly supplied by MiMi Aye, author of Mandalay: Recipes and Tales from a Burmese Kitchen.
Global Cuisine Design Challenge (although I've had this idea since the food memories challenge - of preparing food with my mum and auntie in a loving but organised chaos kitchen)
I didn’t quite know what I was getting myself into the first time I happened upon a Chinese hotpot restaurant, but the deliciousness is something everyone should experience! Hotpot has everything you could ask for in a great meal - a shared dinner filled with a variety of fresh ingredients that you get to cook yourself right at the table in a simmering pot of perfectly seasoned broth while socializing with your friends and family. Yes, please!
Fave Memory - I grew up in the British countryside an didn't try spicy fragrant Asian flavours until I was all grown up. I will never forget that first meal, my life was changed forever, and Asian cuisine has become a part of who I am and what I eat. I cannot imagine what my life would be like without ginger, garlic and chilli!
my paper sculptures illustrate this meal. perfectly displaying the geometry of food. the curves, lines, circles, squares shown separately and as a whole to create a meal. i've created of all the ingredients and the final dish. "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" I use paper i've saved from various places. The pasta is made from old manila file envelopes (thank you marsi). You can see the writing still on it. Much of my other paper is from printing sample books i saved from the trash years ago. Joanne DeWald
I modified this illustration from a Brooklyn Art Library Sketchbook Project that I did in 2018 called 'Song of the Shrimp.' The original was cut paper with marker. I photoshopped the scan from that page quite a bit and added the bubble captions.
