This burst of yum illustrates one of my great loves. A simple appetizer or snack for some is a perfectly proper happy meal for me. The creamy avocado with a punch of heat, coupled with the satisfying saltiness of a perfectly toasted chip. *runs for kitchen* 😋
India is a country filled with such a diverse cuisine.Biryani is a famous Indian dish that is made for special occasions. My family is from Hyderabad, so we have our own twists to make our food, and of course, no one makes it better than my mom! Even though there are a lot of ingredients, it's a dish that is worth making, it brings together family, friends, and loved ones in a comforting way.
Ramen is one of my favorite comfort foods. The creamy broth and the chewy noodles never disappoint. In Amsterdam there is a tiny restaurant where you can sit on the bar and enjoy your ramen while watching the cooks preparing the food. This illustration is inspired by this.
My Happy Meal:
A taco party is my happy meal. When my family gets together, it is quite a crowd. We have never been a quiet family... add 3 excited grandchildren to the mix and you have a party! Tacos are the perfect meal to serve. With so many choices of ingredients, everyone can make tacos to their taste. Lots of people, lots of tacos, lots of love.
Malayali food has a special place in my heart and the Onam Sadya has always been the yearly delight I eagerly wait for. This grand meal is served on a banana leaf and can have up to 30 items sometimes. Last year due to the lockdown, we decided to cook this meal on our own and managed to put together 20 things, much to our delight. To prepare for this, I usually skip (or have a very light) breakfast to have enough space in my tummy to devour all the delicacies, Can't wait for the festival to come around again.
I first discovered Poke bowls in Paris ans was swept away by this fresh bowl of goodness. It quickly made its way up to one of my favorite meals, especially in summer. The sweet mango, the fresh cucumber and coriander, the crunchy edamame, and of course, the buttery avocado and fresh salmon make this bowl a very much enjoyable ride in textures and tastes.
Being a 90's kid from India, I always remember the times when life was a lot simpler. Immersed in a virtual era full of gadgets, most of us, especially the 90s’ born wish we could go back in time; where mobile phones and social media had no place. My favourite meal as a kid was what my mom would prepare for my birthday party. I remember all my friends gathering around the dining table to cut the cake where all the other dishes would be kept. This image is a tribute to those happy days.
When I was pregnant with my first child, my husband and I were eating at a coastal restaurant in Rhode Island. I suffered from terrible morning sickness day and night. The only thing that looked appealing on the menu was octopus mac ‘n cheese. (It was mac ‘n cheese topped with a hotdog carved into the shape of an octopus.) It was “pregnancy craving at first sight!” But there was one problem, the restaurant wouldn’t allow me to order it since it was on the kids menu. Shame on them, I never returned to the restaurant! However, this story has a happy ending since I’ve since recreated this guilty pleasure meal at home with my kiddos and it’s always a hit!
My happy place to eat my happy meal would be anywhere on the MA or RI coast!
