Created and submitted for the "Beans Around the World" contest, under the "It's BEAN in the Family for Generations" sub-category, this chili recipe is one of my go-to staples. It's a slightly-adapted version of a recipe from my grandma and is wonderfully simple. If you try it out just be sure to add generous spices (cumin, pepper, garlic powder, chili powder, paprika, and oregano) if you aren't using a taco seasoning spice blend (and maybe add some extra even if you are).
One day my sister and I came home from school to that overwhelmingly delicious scent of turkey cooking. Mom, however, explained that her friend Ina's oven had broken down. And since Ina had a thawed turkey that HAD to be cooked, Mom baked the turkey as a favor to her. ?!? Who knew Mom had such a sense of humor! She continued to surprise us with turkey off and on, but we didn't fall for the "It's for Ina" trick again. I never did discover her super secret turkey thawing station, though she finally spilled the beans to me last week!
This recipe is based off of how my mom makes meatloaf. Her meatloaf turns out a bit differently each time because she "makes up the recipe as she goes", adding different sauces or extra ingredients whenever she prepares it. The illustration was hand drawn and then colored digitally by me. If you're interested in seeing more of my artwork, please check out my Behance page: https://www.behance.net/cpeters11a710
When you're off to a family picnic or outdoor concert, this spectacular sandwich--made on a loaf of artisan bread--hits the spot every time! My family always makes this when we're going to a summer concert at the Hollywood Bowl. It's great for sharing and pairs perfectly with fresh fruit, caprese salad, green salad, and fancy olives!
