Our family has enjoyed Grandma’s delicious pinto bean recipe for over 75 years. Even during the lean years, when money was scarce, my grandparents enjoyed a daily serving of pinto beans which provided protein, fiber, and other vitamins and minerals...and they were tasty to eat, too. We are grateful for the “ legacy of beans” in our family!
My illustration is aimed at encouraging people to use dry beans in recipes, by presenting the easy method of cooking them. I love the variety of dry beans available, so I've illustrated a few of the different shapes colours and sizes (from adzuki to black eyed peas, from pinto beans to black beans). As many middle eastern recipes use pulses in the cooking I have decorated the page with appropriate patterns and warm terracotta colours.
A quick and easy soup to warm our heart. My mama always make sweet beans soup since we were still kids. This is her recipe after adding more and more ingredients throughout the years. I asked her why adding so much in one pot, she says "add whatever beans you feel like eating and it will be yummy"
Pasta e Fagioli is a traditional italian soup and consists of inexpensive ingredients. There are a lot of variations of this dish, due to the availability of the ingredients in the different regions of Italy. Dean Martin popularized this dish with his song „That’s Amore“ which includes the lyrics "When the stars make you drool, just like pasta fazool, that's amore".
I've been a vegetarian more of my life than not, and I LOVE chili with lots of delicious, nutritious beans and spicy ingredients. I also love the nostalgia of vintage slow cookers, and memories of delicious smells in the kitchen for hours when I was growing up.
If happens that you love a lot your onions, garbanzos and chicken I'm convinced that you will fall in love with this recipe.
This traditional comfort chickpeas soup is a worth dish to try in any season, it's fulfilling with vermicelli rice.
For the rise preparation just toast a hand full of vermicelli in 2 tablespoon of butter to golden brown, then add the washed rise and cover it with water, cook on low heat until cooked. Serve warm.
"La Cazuela de Paisa" is traditional in the region where I was born in Medellin, Colombia. Made with red kidney beans it can be accompanied with avocado, "chicharron", ripe plantain, potato chips, hogao. The recipe has been passed down from generation to generation. A meal full of color and delicious ingredients typical of the Colombian Andean region.
