I took Koosje's Sketchbook Skool Kourse "Draw it Like it's Hot" and here is my submission!
I grew up in Philadelphia and Tony's has been a huge part of my growing up. My grandfather managed the place for the owner, my aunt was a Hostess there. Tony's Place was where we went for great food. I live on Long Island now and although there are plenty of places here to get great pizza, no one has tomato pies like Tony's. So I have to make it myself or drive 2 and half hours to get there. This is my version....
My grandma's macaroni salad recipe; a childhood favorite and one I would request whenever I returned from college or studying abroad and still ask for on my birthday. According to my grandma, it's even magical... Legend has it, she once gave the recipe to a young lady who was hoping to get a marriage proposal from her boyfriend. They went on a picnic, she served the salad, and sure enough, he popped the question right then and there.
Drawn for Sketchbook Skool's "Draw It Like It's Hot!" class.
I am a picnic fan for two reasons: they tend to include simple, local food and they indicate that some sort of adventure is underway.
The last beach picnic I had included fresh crab from the local market, eaten in the dunes on the Oregon coast. But for this recipe I've chosen my favorite—smoked fish—as a nod to the shores of Lake Superior, where I first learned the joy of taking a break from exploring to eat a simple meal.
I must have a thing for tomatoes and mozzarella; I have also illustrated Insalata Caprese. Lately I've been experimenting with hand-written recipes, like when you quickly scribble down something because you don't feel like printing out the recipe online. Or the feeling of seeing a favorite hand-written recipe from family or friends.
I'm also always looking for the authentic and learned a lot about how to produce that perfectly charred Napoletana pizza crust. If all else fails, there is always the grill and the bonus of garden tomatoes and basil this summer... might just try making homemade fresh mozzarella sometime, too!
