My best picnic memory is the Bento box made by my mother when we went to see cherry blossoms. The best picnic season in Japan is spring when we can enjoy cherry blossoms. We bring Bento box filled with lots of goodies, sit under cherry trees, look at cherry blossoms, eat and talk. The Bento made by my mother was filled with Norimaki (sushi rolls), Karaage (garlic ginger fried chicken), Tako-san wiener (octopus-shaped grilled sausage), Usagi-ringo (rabbit shaped apples), Chikuwa-kyuri (fish sausage with cucumber) and many more. I miss those days but I can always go on a picnic if I close my eyes. I hope my drawing makes you smile especially if you miss your family.
We all enjoy a good picnic...unfortunately so do the sneaky seagulls! More than once over the years they've swooped in to snatch a bag of chips or even a sandwich. These days I may have upgraded to wine and cheese, but I still remain vigilant for these persistent pinchers of picnic provisions!
since the pandemy and social distancing began, picnics and all outdoor activities seem like they belonged in a different lifetime. With distorted perspectives and vivid colors i wanted to capture a dream scene of a warm summer day picnic.
I created this illustration of two friends (and one cute pup) enjoying a picnic in a city park. Parks are one of my favorite sites to visit in a city because they are a little bubble of quiet and nature in the middle of a busy and bustling atmosphere. So, I thought a park would be the perfect place for two friends to catch up and enjoy a fruit and cheese spread, complete with sparkling seltzer!
I have a young family (a 4 year old and 8 month old), and going on picnics together has been one of the main ways we’ve had some adventure during quarantine. It has allowed us to safely make a space for ourselves at the park, in a small patch of grass, or even our backyard! While our picnics may not be fancy, and probably a bit messy, it’s been the center of so many laughs, conversations, and memories!
