Since I can remember, my family has enjoyed black eyed peas and other savory side dishes on New Year's Day to symbolize the good luck and fortune we want to invite into our new year. This illustration depicts our recipe (with a few modern updates) and shows a family enjoying the tradition. As I was finalizing this illustration I found some old stationery my late mother had written some recipes on. It was such a treat to be able to include it in this drawing about family traditions.
Beans are so healthy and yet so underrated. They are high in fiber and score low on the glycemic index, which regulates the blood sugar. Beans are also a great source of protein and minerals such as iron, magnesium and zinc. It’s recommended to eat 3 cups of beans per week.
I'm not Japanese and I've never BEAN in Japan (even if it's in my dreams), but when I thought about beans it came immediately to my mind the movie "Sweet bean" because of the unique relationship between Ms. Toku (the main character) and the beans. She treated the adzuki beans for her dorayaki with love and respect, that's why her anko (the red bean paste) was so delicious!
Feijoada is one of the most popular dishes in Brazil. It is made with black beans and some smoked meat and it's served with rice, farofa, collard and sliced orange. We usually eat it on fridays or on weekends. Feijoada Dumpling is a different way of preparing it. A creative version of one of the most famous Brazilian dishes. It is delicious and goes great with a really cold beer.
Fresh, crunchy, creamy and tangy...this bean salad is healthy comfort food. I always make a huge bowlful expecting it to last 2-3 days but it never does! I use as many colours and textures in the vegetables as I can so it looks as good as it tastes. Whenever I feel a little run down, this salad is my go-to booster!
Pinto Chile Pie has been a staple meal since I moved to the Southwest! It is a delicious, layered assortment of ingredients that are often sourced locally. Can't go wrong with pinto beans, rice, and green chile! Enjoy!
