Beans Around The World.
My aunt lived in Panama for a couple of years in the 1970's. When she returned, she brought back amazing sandstone carvings and molas. As I was looking at Google images of Panama, I realized how much the area changed since she was there. So I decided to draw my interpretation of a modern mola, using various buildings as a backdrop.
The buildings illustrated (yes, I used some artistic license) are: 1) The rooftop ramp is Frank Gehry's Biomuseo; 2) The spice grinder/spewer is the W Hotel Panama; 3) The mandolin slicer/chopper is Central Tower; and 4) The circular slide is F & F Tower. I loved the idea of combining a kitchen with a playground, which is how I think of my kitchen.
This piece is for the Bean Contest! I wanted to illustrate a Vietnamese bean dessert I used to love as a child called Che Ba Mau which translates to Three Color Dessert. It consists of sweetened red beans, mashed mung beans, pandan jelly, and a sweet coconut sauce on top! Yum! The dish is typically served over crushed ice and was a favorite of mine during hot summers.
Beans around the world: I don’t know of a more versatile veggie! It’s uses & recipes are endless & it’s a staple for a lot of diets. Protein packed, flavorful & soooo many varieties to choose from. It plays well with other veggies, use hot or cold, in soups, salads, flours, & much more. Every country has their unique twist on BEANS 😋
Beans are the main subsistence base in Salvadoran families. Each member adds the ingredients to their taste, and just like that the bean soup magic is created. This piece is a compilation of ingredients and combinations that Salvadoran people make in the White Beans soup (Great Northern Beans) and in the Red Beans soup.
The hand draw digital style is presented in typography and illustration as a reflection of the combination of flavors that each person can create. The background of the piece refers to the typical tablecloth occupied in El Salvador.
Some of my favorite Japanese food includes these sweet, sweet treats that are all made from beans. Red bean paste on toast, zenzai sweet dessert soup, sakura mochi, ichigo daifuku and other colorful namagashi made from white bean paste to enjoy with your tea.
