Les Vivres (now Aux Vivres) was the first vegan restaurant in Montreal. Their famous végélox is a faux smoked salmon spread made with shredded carrots, parsil, dulse flakes, liquid smoke, lemon Juice and olive oil. They still serve végélox, but it's now full of garnishes and it costs 12.75$.
Indonesian traditional snack usually consist of : glutinous rice, coconut milk, shredded coconut, palm sugar, and... colored green (pandan leaves flavored). It is kind of typical snack around Malaysia, Thailand, and neighboring South East Asia.
Of course we have snack that has no characters above, but that still consider as traditional Indonesian, because it have been known in the archipelago for really long time. Usually those are snacks that we've adopt during colonial era, or even older than that! Sometimes that particular food stray so far away from the original food, but still hold the same name! While the local wineries were closed due to the pandemic, my friend Susie and I made do by setting up in my front yard where the view is incredible and the laughs are many. My happy place and such a happy time sharing local soft-shell sandwiches, steamed shrimp, spinach & artichoke dip, cheeses and cherries.
The recipe is my mom’s. Made with hung curd and tempered with mustard seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves...finely chopped onion, green/red chillies....fresh coriander...
Just spread on a toast and you’ve got a wonderful healthy snack...
Creamy and distinct in flavor, goat cheese is a dairy product enjoyed around the world.
I love this delicious toast! it’s an explosion of flavors with lots of contrast!
1 1/2 tbsp Olive Oil plus some for drizzling
1 Red Onion, roughly sliced
1 tbsp Balsamic Vinegar
1 1/2 tbsp Brown Sugar
100g Goat Cheese, crumbled (feta or blue cheese is good too)
6-8 Thick slices of Fresh Bread (white or brown), toasted
Heat the oil in a pan on a low heat, then add the onions. Continue to cook on a low heat for 5 minutes or so, until the onions are starting to soften. Add the vinegar and sugar and cook (still on a low heat) for another 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Meanwhile, toast your bread in a toaster or under the grill, then drizzle with olive oil.
When the onions are done, spread evenly on the toast then crumble the cheese over each slice and serve with side salad.
Growing up in The Netherlands lunch for me meant “toast+peanutbutter”, nothing fancy but so good. Now that I’ve been living in London for a year I realize how “typically dutch” this actually is. I still love my toast with some good old fashioned peanut butter but definitely enjoy other things as well.

The best time for me to make this toast is NOW - because that’s when we have these edible flowers in our Florida garden! In a pinch, I can use purslane flowers and purple sorrel flowers, too. The flowers are arranged artfully over a smear of soft cheese, and bread fresh from our local supermarket seals the deal!
