I have this memory of summer picnics with my friends. One of them always brought homemade pizza by his mum. These pizzas were not only delicious but also really beautiful. They were decorated with edible flowers! That made them really special. Now, I love to use fresh wildflowers in my dishes, collecting them is wonderful and they cheer any recipe! There any many uses for edible flowers, this illustration represents some of them, along with my favorite ones!
Now that I live away from Spain, what I miss most is the fruit and vegetables, specially some varieties you can only find there.
We are very lucky to have amazing heirloom vegetables and fruit. They make great ingredients in the Mediterranean diet, they are tasty and unique, especially when collected at the peak of they ripeness.
There are many other veggies and fruits I left out, for instance, borage is very popular where I was brought up, Aragon.
When I read the description of the contest, and I thought about home flavors, it came to my mind the sweetness of juicy peaches, fresh salads with roasted piquillos, a cold melon left in a stream to get cold for dessert after a picnic… I did some research on Spanish fruits and vegetables, and surprisingly, I could find much information or any map on the subject!
This Mediterranean inspired feast is perfect to enjoy during the sunset. The Mediterranean diet, one of the healthiest in the world, definitely offers the rainbow! Fresh salads, golden breads, vegetable proteins, sweet ripe fruits and, why not a vegan nut cheese?
I hope this illustration inspires many people to design a Mediterranean dinner to enjoy with their loved ones, specially outside, enjoying nature. I had a lot of fun drawing this!
I really like Artichokes, they are versatile, delicious and healthy! My favourite at home are the chips, as they are very easy to cook and make a perfect side dish. This is my contribution to the "Saveitsunday" campaign.
