Bio:

Andrew Lindsay

For the past thirty years I have worked as an artist/ freelance designer. Extra Mural Projects I established in 1997 and I have coordinated well over 150 mural art /mosaic projects in and around Gauteng and Southern Africa, including Angola. Besides my love for and commitment to mural art, I have also designed book covers and illustrated many books for large publishing houses; designed posters and brochures for NGOs and developed visual aids for a number of organisations.
Perhaps the most prestigious award was winning the competition with Mira Kampstra Fassler to make the court doors for the new Constitution in 2004.
Over the last decade I have worked mainly producing and co-ordinating public artworks for the City, predominantly mosaic works these include the 1922 strike in Bertrams ,cows on Transport square and many others, both public and private realm .
I have exhibited my own work from 1985 onwards mainly in group exhibitions including an exhibition in Yeoville with William Kentridge and Jane Alexander in the mid-eighties. I held a one person exhibition in 2006 called ‘Tuis Gebakte Stories’ at Gordart. This was an exhibition of 100 plates with stories on them. More recently at the Bamboo Salon exhibition and the Turbine Hall Art Fair.
I qualified with an arts degree majoring in painting from the old Technikon (now UJ) in 1983 I studied under Willem Boshof, amongst others.

In 2001 I started the Spaza Art Gallery and this was to provide a space for young emerging artists –many of whom I met on my travels during the production of my mosaic/mural projects around the country.
