On the first of each month, from July 2012 through December 2013, we picked a favorite recipe and awarded the artist $100. Here are all the winners...
December 2014 Our winner this month is Matcha Cupcakes by Heather Pullen from Savannah, GA. We were both enchanted by this beautiful scene and the story it tells. Every detail is so well thought out and we love seeing green tea being used as a baking ingredient. Heather tells us she adapted this recipe from the blog Oishii Treats. We think she completely captured the essence of this wonderful recipe.
November 2013 Our winner this month is Vanilla Ice Cream by Liang Zhang from Glasgow, Scotland. We love this inventive and energetic illustration! It's such a great nod to his love of hip hop and Pharell William's clothing brands BBC and ICECREAM. The color palette and sprinkles made us smile too ; ) This would make an awesome animated recipe, right?!
October 2013 Maryland Institute College of Art student Elizabeth O'Rear's recipe for Snickerdoodles is more than a recipe: it's an entire story! We love the messy counter, the proud baker (missing tooth and all!), the composition and the vintage illustration style. There is nothing better than a recipe that has been perfected over time. And we think it's grand that Elizabeth's mom never cared how messy things got because Elizabeth was always a happy baker! Congratulations Elizabeth!
September 2013 Sometimes the best recipes are those that remind us to be healthy and nurture the little ones in our lives. Nathalie Beauvois warmed our hearts (and tummies) with her adorable Back to School Healthy Snacks recipe. We think this should be hanging in every school cafeteria. Congratulations Nathalie!
August 2013 Pau Morgan brightened our day with this colorfully fresh recipe for Sopa de Coco . All of Pau's recipes are fantastic. The simple sophisticated art style combined with the deliciously easy recipe make this a winner for sure. Congratulations Pau!
July 2013 Sandy Gin from San Francisco made us laugh outloud with these ninja monkeys!!! I guess we're just in the mood to monkey around this month because we went bananas over this yummy recipe ; ). But seriously, Baked Banana Tempura is on our list of must try recipes. Woo-hoo Sandy! See all of Sandy's great recipes here.
June 2013 This is London-based illustrator Alberta Torres' first TDAC Recipe illustration and, for us, it was love at first sight! The title, Chica Chica Boom Salad , is hilarious and we love all the texture and color Alberta uses in her artwork. The recipe itself sounds delicious too. What a flavor combo: lemon, shrimp, papaya and mint! Congratulations Alberta - $100 on the way!
May 2013 The delicate and delicious watercolored recipes of Aliona Bereghici, an artist/illustrator from Moldova, won our hearts and $100 this month. Our favorite (although it's so hard to pick just one favorite!) is her illustration for an Asparagus Frittata, which looks delicious! See all of Aliona's TDAC Recipes here.
April 2013 There were so many great recipes this month that we couldn't decide on a winner! We narrowed it down to these 3 fantastic recipes (all done by Columbus College of Art & Design students actually!), then asked TDAC fans to vote for their favorite by leaving a comment on the recipe. 43 people picked Mostly Toastly by Hannah Ross. Congrats Hannah! 33 people voted for (day old) Donut Pudding and 23 people voted for The Dirty Girl Scout .
March 2013 We had 64 amazing and varied submissions in March but kept coming back to this scrumptious recipe for Greek Walnut Pie by Columbus College of Art & Design student Rachel Pierce. We love how well integrated everything is right down to the greek style font. The Greek gods would be proud!
February 2013 Devon Johnson, a student from Maine College of Art, will receive $100 for the super hip styling and great lettering on his recipe for Asian Cucumber Salad . We love all the positive energy that this illustration emits. Congrats Devon!
January 2013 Naomi Bardoff from Oakland, California is this month's $100 winner. Her recipe for Lentil Soup with Lemon sings with brightness and healthy freshness. The real soup is every bit as wonderful as the illustration. When this recipe arrived we immediately made it!
December 2012 Monika Roe is a frequent contributor to this site, as well as sister-site They Draw & Travel. We adore everything she does, and this latest recipe is no exception! Monika has taken Cranberry Sauce to a whole new level with her fabulous festive flourishes and sparkly crystal! We want to sit at the dinner table where this is being served!
November 2012 Ciara Flood, a London-based freelance designer and illustrator, illustrated this month's winning recipe: Giant Bun in the Oven . This recipe is not only an awesome illustration full of great style and lettering but a scrumptious recipe and best of all, a full blown party idea!
October 2012 So Yeon Kim, a student of Rebecca Bradley's at Maryland Institute College of Art, illustrated this month's winner recipe: Avocado & Egg Toast . It was almost impossible to select a winning recipe this month, but we kept coming back to this mouth-watering illustration. It's almost like watching the meal being made right in front of your eyes - delicious in every way!
September 2012 Małgorzata Lewandowska-Zych from Warsaw, Poland create this recipe for Vegetable Soup that totally blew us away. It's one of the most creative designs we've seen not only on TDAC, but anywhere. And the best part is...it's a poem too!
August 2012 Kostis Tzortzakakis is from the Greek island of Crete and his recipe for Dakos couldn't have came at a better time - we had this dish for lunch in a hillside taverna while on vacation together this month!
July 2012 Stacy Porter's recipe for a Star-Spangled Trifle was sent to us just in time for the 4th of July holiday and it is not only easy to make and super festive, but also really well-designed.
