Can I illustrate a recipe from a cookbook, magazine or website? According to the U.S. Copyright Office, copyright law does not protect recipes that are mere listings of ingredients. Copyright protection may, however, extend to substantial literary expression—a description, for example—that accompanies a recipe. You can make a published recipe your own by adding a favorite ingredient, illustrating the procedure in your own style, and/or modifying the procedure to make it better.

Can I still post my artwork on my blog or sell the original piece? By all means, yes! The founding principle of TDAC is to promote artists, and we share the mutual goal of getting your work out in the world! However, in order for us to promote your work, it is necessary for you to grant us certain non-exclusive rights to your artwork.

Why do you ask for a 300 dpi file? We need high resolution files in order to print and sell your artwork to people all over the world on things like fine art prints, calendars, and postcards. And, as you can see on our Terms of Service agreement (Section 5D), we will pay you 50% Net License Income on certain licensed products that use your image.

What's all this legal stuff in the Terms of Service? The Terms of Service is a binding agreement that grants us certain rights to your submission. As artists ourselves, we’re not only dedicated to showcasing, promoting and marketing your art, but, unlike other submission-based websites, we have created an “artist friendly” business model intended to actually benefit you, the artist. For instance, if we publish your submission in a book, you’ll not only receive a credit but also a free copy of the book. If we use your submission on certain types of licensed products, such as artprints or calendars, we will pay you 50% Net License Income, as specified in the Terms of Service. Most importantly, you retain ownership of all copyrights you may have in your submission.
